Hi folks,

just finished watching SPR on blu ray and it was brilliant, not seen the film for ages. The girlfriend is in floods of tears hehe, I think she thought it'd just be big bangs and gun fights!

One thing that was annoying though was there were parts or the film at the start and end where the film looked crap. You could tell in scenes with fire that the colours stretched and were distauted. Did anyone else notice this? I feel like I should take it back and swap it

I can't do any screenshots as I watch on a standalone player on my tv.

Not sure the bits your referring to , but some of the blurring and stretching was delibrately added to evoke the few damaged but surviving Robert Capa images from the Omaha Landings

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Capa
His most famous work occurred on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) when he swam ashore with the second assault wave on Omaha Beach. He was armed with two Contax II cameras mounted with 50 mm lenses and several rolls of spare film. Capa took 106 pictures in the first couple of hours of the invasion. However, a staff member at Life in London made a mistake in the darkroom; he set the dryer too high and melted the emulsion in the negatives in three complete rolls and over half of a fourth roll. Only eleven frames in total were recovered.[12] Capa never said a word to the London bureau chief about the loss of three and a half rolls of his D-Day landing film.[13]

The thing is SPR is like Band of Brothers, all the film grain, out of contrast footage, grain and flared brightness is to try and give it a style of war footage to a degree. To make it look old and dated to the viewer. Its never going to be crisp and clear because thats what the director wants.

I think this is what you are refering too and its been in every versons released to my knowledge because its supposed to.

I was this '-> <-' close to picking Saving Private Ryan on Blu-Ray the other day, maybe I'll cave in after all.

I didn't notice it when I watched it last, it must have been not so noticeable in lower resolution. I'll try and take some pictures on my phone of the parts of the film where it occurs. It is much worse than it is in those pictures above.

Doh i bought this yesturday & taken off the wrapper! oh well ill watch it as its a cracking film anyway :) last time i watched it was on VHS , so this has to be better :)

Slinkie, just in case you haven't seen it.

You need to buy Band of Brothers on blu ray too, it's a 10 part mini series. Has the same style as SPR, but is more awesome :D

I have band of brothers and can agree it is brilliant, plus is a great addition to a blu ray collection as it is fantastic quality and looks amazing. I'd recommend the book too if you haven't read it.

Had this arrive this morning as was really excited (was looking forward to this transfer more than any other) about viewing it on a 4 day old G20 and have to say I am considerably underwhelmed at the quality.
I get the whole Capaesque war journalism thing, however, it just feels that it lacked so much punch in terms of detail especially when comparing it to BoB.
I'd even hazard to make a comment that there is not that much of a discernible difference between this and a PS3 up-scaled DVD.

I've still not watched this yet :( can't get myself to do it after reading this post
I know that SPR came out in 1998 & was/is a good film. I think its one of the bad ports to HD imo. Going to take mine back and get the DVD i think :(
