Saving to external drive only

This is probably very simple but I have a laptop with a very small capacity hard drive. I want to save some large documents to an external drive, maybe just a memory stick, but at the moment I can't as it auto saves on my hard drive as well.

How do I prevent it saving to my hard drive so that I can save externally only?

What documents are these and what program is it you're using to save them from? The program should have a "default save location" setting somewhere that you can configure.
