SBS 2003 - Help needed

AD and DNS aren't really difficult:

Start > Run type "dcpromo" > Hit Enter

This will run the domain controller promotion wizard and should prompt you and give you the option to install DNS at the same time. Never installed exchange though so can't help with that :(

Ok,

I can log on to different machines and outlook follows - yay!

But my docs, favourites etc. dont. I have looked into roaming profiles and have created a profiles and user sub folders on the server and added the path under the profile tab of the user setup, but what am I missing?

Cheers,

ICE

your favourites should carry accross to the server profile storage path.

You can use folder redirection for those that do not.

Maybe you need to look at the profiles and make sure that they are roaming.

Also try recreating the profiles from scratch, and deleting all the redundant entries under docs and settings.

Profiles are a pain in the ass, they have a reputation for being trouble.

Tbh id ditch SBS and go for 3 separate servers. I.e Mailserver, and DNS/GC/FMSO roles shared between two others.

You DO NOT want exchange running on a DC, if anything goes wrong your gonna have a seriously hard time.

Slight difference in price though... not all companies can afford that, which is why MS brought out the SBS option

Two good books would be Windows Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices by Harry M. Brelsford and when you really want to get under the bonnet Advanced Windows Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices SBS Mvps (Other Contributor).

Hope you named your server servername.domain.local ;)

Your biggest mistake would be to treat it like a Windows 2003 Server box. It is Small Bussiness Server 2003 and you should where possible do everything from the Server Management Console.

As for roaming profiles, yes they can be a pita. Sometimes I've found you need to logon and logoff a couple of times to get the client machine to dump the profile to the profile path thats been set. Also make sure you can write to that directory from the client machine.

I've been using sbs since 4.5 (which was a dogs dinner) and currently have a few sites running sbs2k and sbs2k3. If its treated right it can be rock solid and last for years. The one thing that really gets me is the licensing. You buy a license for the server, you have a license for the client then they make you buy another one to allow them to talk to each other.
