I've been lumbered with picking up the pieces on this

Two new servers. One will be F&P plus the DC, the second server just Exchange 2007 (not a DC).

Can you transfer FMSO/AD roles away from an SBS 2003 server prior to dcpromo'ing it gracefully out of the AD?

Rough plan I have so far:

  • Ensure SBS server is currently patched (Windows SP, Exchange SP etc)
  • Add Server 1 to the SBS domain
  • Run adprep to update the AD schema to Server 2008
  • dcpromo Server 1 to become a DC
  • Add Server 2 to the domain as a member server
  • Run adprep to update the AD for Exchange 2007
  • Install Exchange 2007
  • Move mailboxes from SBS to Exchange 2007
  • Move user data from SBS to Server 1
  • Transfer FMSO/AD roles to Server 1
  • dcpromo to retire SBS server

Anyone notice anything missing?

Cheers,
Chris.
