As the beta for SBS 2011 is out we have begun getting ready to transition form SBS 2003 to 2008, and as far as I can tell its a pile of garbage, it seems very watered/dumbed down from 2k3 (which was dumbed down from 2k but this is ridiculous)

According to this:

http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2008/09/16/sbs-2008-supported-networking-topology.aspx

SBS 2k8 does not support two network cards in the server (so the server can sit between the internal switches and the router) and it requires the use of private IP addresses.

Im not sure if they are deliberately crippling SBS to force people to buy Server 2k8 and the addons separately but seriously this is making me reconsider leaving 2k3.

Anybody else experienced this? how have you found it?

Our current topology is SBS 2k3 main box and Server 2K DNS/WWW box connected to router and the master network switch connected to the SBS 2k3 box. SBS 2k3 box running DHCP/Email/SQL/backup/antivirus/file storage/AD/etc.

Beta for SBS 2011 is out? It's been gold / production for ages - we've done numerous SBS 2003 to 2011 migrations now.

What do you see as watered down?

IMHO, use a firewall appliance to handle the Internet security and ditch the dual-homed Windows box.

I was always under the impression that a multihomed DC was something to be avoided. I don't doubt that you have your reasons for setting it up like this, but it's not a configuration I've come across on the 50 or so SBS boxes we support.

I always found a 2 NIC SBS2000/3 box with ISA sitting on it was a pain in the backside. I was glad to see the back of it in SBS2008/11

SBS 2008/2011 with single nic configuration took away so many headaches and as the others have already said a dedicated firewall/UTM appliance sorts out the rest.

SBS 2011 works really well
