SBS 2011 remote access with dynamic IP address.

Hi,

Sorry for the multiple posts but it seems multiple questions seem not to get answered if they are all in one post.

I have a SBS 2011 server running at home with a domain currently being forwarded to it (bought and currently being configured).

I have a dynamic IP address. How do I link my new domain name with the dynamic IP address ?. I expect to only use it for remote access (webmail etc) as I am not hosting any real website on it.

As Ed says, something like DynDNS will do the job for you http://www.dyndns.com/. If your router supports it then that's the cleanest and easiest way, otherwise they provide an app to run on your server which does the same job.

Cheers guys. I didn't know dynDNS works with your own domains rather than just their *.dyndns.com type domains.

I think my router has DDNS so I will take a look there.

Of course it may well just be cheaper to purchase a static IP from your ISP if they have that option.

I believe they are only available for business accounts which are much more expensive and this is in a home environment.

Static IPs are available to home users from almost all ISPs.

Unfortunately not here in SIngapore where the only way to get one is via a business account which is pretty expensive.

Dynamic DNS will be fine tbh, it only really falls down when your IP changes very regularly. Which if you leave your router on, it won't.

My IP seems to be pretty static at the moment so I will monitor and use dynamic DNS if it starts jumping again.
