Had a powercut and the server doesnt have a UPS so wasnt shut down properly. Server is back up and running now but no emails are coming through. Had a look at the echange server status and the status says Critcal: Service not running.

How do I get the service back running? Ive tried going into to services and restarting anything which has Microsoft Exchange in the system but it hasnt worked.

Thanks

check the event log. whne you started the services it should have logged any issues. Which service isn't running?

Has the information store started OK?

look at the first errors in the even log after a reboot, what are they?

try and restart the services at least 3 times

you will get loads of errors' from exchange (most likley) however only the first error (or few) are important as after the first service fails everything else fails (so theerrors are not important)

also dont despaire, as you fix each error another may stop the system starting, so as you start trouble shooting MAKE SURE the error in the event logs thats stopping everything working is still the same... (or you will fix one error and not realise it)

From my experience with exchange the Simple mail transport protocol service will need restarting after all of the exchange services are running. To test, try stopping and restarting the exchange transport services, one will take minutes to stop if the SMTP service isnt working correctly. restart the SMTP service and they should all start in seconds normally.
