Hi all

I need some scaffolding erected around the house, and I wondered if someone in the know could give a rough guestimate because I've never used a scaffolding service before.

It's a 2 bed end of terrace house, and I'll need scaffolding going around the front, back and side at eaves level, or a bit lower.

I need to fit eaves protectors underneath the bottom row of tiles and also cap the fascias with UPVC.

Thanks

I've had roofers come do some work in my 3 story town house, needed scaffolding front and back for 2 days, the roofer told me it was going to cost between £600-£800 to rent it out.
I'm not sure if thats going rate or roofers just trying to make money out of me but some quotes from roofers varied for the quotes they gave me which I couldn't tell you for price wise.

All I know its not cheap!

Thanks, it sounds expensive but I have no idea of the rates. I can't imagine it'll take longer than a few hours to erect. My materials will cost less than that. Fingers crossed my quote comes in cheaper.

You pay to have it put up, you pay to have it taken down and you pay a hire charge for the time it's in place.

Get three quotes and pick the middle one :)

I'd expect it to cost about £1000 as a guess I remember 10 years ago my chimney scaffold to install a liner was about £600 in the South East and 5 years ago I got a different but much larger house scaffold all around the eaves was £2000 in South Wales. It's a decent size scaffold and scaffolders are in mad demand at the moment £30+ per hour is the going rate in industry outside London. Not sure about domestic but it'll be similar.

I could manage in the front and back with a tower, but need proper scaffolding for the gable end side because there's a garage below. We used a youngman board going across from the tower to the ridge of the garage when painting the walls, but still needed long extension poles to reach the apex.

I might also get a quote for side only plus a tower.

While it might not seem a lot of work for guys to do the work but you have to justify their own cost to put these up experience, materials, insurance, transport and etc. Do your due diligence, get your quotes and more importantly get someone who has pride in their work and not some cowboy who can undercut someone who's got years of experience.

If you are only doing minor works on the bottom rows of tiles and the fascias, could you get by with a mobile tower, rather than having it all scaffolded out?

You obviously need firm ground underneath, but theres quite a lot of adjustment available to level them up on slopes

If you can use a mobile tower then the MiTowers linked above are very good. I use a similar setup professionally and can assemble one in about 15 minutes by myself. The adjustable legs are easy to work with too.

why does scaffold sound like it's ridiculously easy money or do they have really high insurance for it?

have you seen the asians with the bamboo ?

I used a tower and used eye bolts in wall to make sure it didn't move. Left eye bolts in for future use. It was my tower.

Have you seen them unload a truck full of bamboo poles - reverse fast then slam brakes on -they just slid off the back.

I've had a quote for £600. I asked him about just having scaffolding on the gable end and me moving a tower up and down for the front and back, but he said it's only £100-£150 cheaper and easier for them to go around the house to enable them to tie it all together. It will certainly be easier for me too.

You get it for 8 weeks, which is handy because I can do the work on weekends rather than booking off holiday, plus I can give all the woodwork a good inspection and easily measure up before ordering the materials.

Sounds about right. We paid £400 for the front of the house.
