Sounds like the disc is either going or it has a few bad sectors, can I use scandisk on my iPod without ruining it? I haven't tried it yet as its a bit hit and miss as to whether or not it will be recognised in windows at all.

As long as you have a backup of all your music, what have you got to lose? It's not likely to permanently trash the disk.

Similary Windows offers me a defrag of my 60gb video - will it do any harm?
No - defrag only reorganises your data for optimum efficiency. It can't do any harm :)

Apparently, you shouldn't defrag flash disks. But it should be fine to scandisk and defrag HDD-based MP3 players.
