alritey ive managed to get the files i need as txt files saved as .bmps, now all i need to do is change the txt from the scanned bitmaps into word documents....

Simple OCR isn't bad and it's free http://www.simpleocr.com/ but I think you'll need to scan to a JPG file first to use it.
Ignore the Profile message when it starts and just click Select.

I'm thinking of trying a free copy of ReadIris v7 that was on a mag cover disk recently; maybe a free version can be downloaded.

We use Omnipage Pro 14 here at work, seems to always do a decent job even with documents that have symbols and mathematical formulas on, last time I knew it was pretty expensive though for the Pro version.

Anyway, some sort of OCR program is what your after.
