Scanning then emailing woes

I have just scanned three images of receipts using a Canon Lide20 scanner. Copied one receipt and then pasted the receipt into a Microsoft Word document. I have done this for all three receipts so three Word docs in total to be sent via email.

When OE was emailing the docs it took a few minutes (to be expected) but as it got to 99% done it threw up a message saying that the file size is too big too send.

So my question is how can I reduce the size of the docs/images.
