So i have just a standard desktop (Waiting for touch monitors ot come out)
But i want to upgrade to windows 8 now.

Will it keep EVERYTHING?
Once installed can i continue with everything i was doing before?

I have programs such as photoshop (Not real - Sorry)
And 3ds max, UDK etc etc.. and lots of work files.

Will it all be okay, and just have a nice new modern UI?

Thnaks.

What operating system are you using now ?, if your on Windows 7 the upgrade can keep all your programs and settings and files as they are, Win Vista just keeps settings and files and WinXP just keeps your files.

So if your on Windows 7 its an easy upgrade, also if your on 32bit it will install Windows 8 32bit if your on 64bit it will install Windows 64bit.

Use the upgrade assistant, found on the microsoft store. Choose purchase upgrade and it will ask to install upgrade assistant, it will inform you what will not run with the upgrade.

If you choose not to upgrade, just cancel from there.

I upgraded with the intention of keeping all file. It did but most things didn't work.
Steam and origin were two for starters that kept crashing.

Well if steam and origin (Battlefield etc) dont work, then i think i'll wait until they, to upgrade. MS almost had my money there :P

Steam has never been an issue for me in windows 8, it ran fine on all of the pre-release versions. most people complaining about steam crashing are installing the release version of win8 and expecting steam to run without reinstalling that as well...

my steam install and origin were ok after the upgrade only thing i had to reinstall was my soundcard and kaspersky av

installed yesterday so far so good, all games still work including street fighter x tekken which assistant said there was a problem with! (think its basicly win 7 in the background anyway) had to reinstall my razor mouse drivers, updated my gfx driver just in case, thats about it. i had a weird problem last night and just now with the gfx card deciding to lose connection with the monitor and blink on and off a few times which never happened with win 7 (havent touched hardware for ages) but thats probably some weird driver issue! oh yeah had to reinstall kasperky which was anoying because now i cant find my licence key lol!

I would go for a fresh install, every time.

I have 2 HDD so i just keep all my software and files on the 2nd HDD and then load a clean install of windows 8 on the C Drive and load all the programs from the 2nd HDD pretty easy :)

Steam and Origin work fine on my two Win8 PCs,been playing Skyrim,ME3 multiplay all weekend etc...GW2,XCOM also run fine as well, could be another issue you have,so far not encountered any gaming problems and yes I'm a serious gamer.

steam definitely works, at worst it'll hash check files.

Origin might work or it might start from scratch, even EA cant be bad enough to stop games working on windows 8. BF3 previously refuses to install as win8 uses a new directx, most installs will allow skipping of dx but origin did not, they must have fixed this surely
