I'm an ICT Technician in a High school, I've been here a few months now, and I get on really well with all the staff.

Now I've been offered 5 hours a week teaching ICT to the students.

Now the way I see this, Is that it's an amazing opportunity to get teaching on my CV, How great would that look!

Reason i'm scared, The school I'm currently at, Isn't a good one, It's essentially the school where all the problem kids get pushed into. We have our own police officer stationed here for the love of pete!

How would I, Someone with no teaching experience, No experience with troubled kids, Cope with that sort of career move.

It's very scary.

Just thought I'd post this up here, and get some general comments :)

Be firm with them. Don't take crap. Worked for the teachers teaching the lower sets (which was generally where the ****s were). :)

Take the opportunity man. Be firm but fair. If they want to let, teach them. If they dont, dismiss them from the class and ask headmasters to remove them from class for good :)

I hear the army / navy store have good deals on stab proof vests and remember make yourself look big and make lots of loud noises.

Be Firm but fair(If they don't listen make 'em listen) and entertain them with stories of your youthful misdeeds(Give them Ideas they need to learn) and most Improtantly Have fun

Have you not learned anything in your time at OcUK?

Carry around plenty of keyboards, practise your ovary punching, and all the rest of the lame sayings that get thrown around

But seriously dude, go for it. Just be firm with them, and just don't act like you're nervous or uncomfortable. They love that

5 hours a week isnt really a lot tbh which suggests that it might not be infront of a large class (maybe a subset of a class sent out to do ITC?)... You need to find out exactly what would be expected; numbers, times etc.

I would give it a go if I were you.

Personally although not a teacher or training to be one, I would be firm but also treat them like adults show them some respect as well, it might work.. you might get crucified... who knows.

Surley as an inexperienced new comer the school would have to have some form of class room aid in place that you can look to for help in these situations.

As the rest say. Be firm but fair.

And if it is such a problematic school, you get more browney points for getting your feet in and hands dirty ;)

Indeed, i doubt they would just throw you to the lions like that. They might even ask you to observe a few lessons before you start so you get a good idea of what you're meant to be doing

Well I've been told I'll be trained, So wouldn't be thrown in at the deepend. It's just I was offered the opportunity today. And the nerve and butterflies are swarming still.

I will be firm, My problem is I'm not a shouter, I try and reason. I've never been good at shouting, but so many people here, I can hear them bellowing down the corridors! :D

Maybe it's a good thing though that i'm not a shouter. Maybe they'd respect me if i talk to them like adults.

Maybe they'll nail me to their newly installed smartboards. :p

Don't be firm, let them do what they want, occasionally bring in cake - this way you lower your chances of getting stabbed.

:p

Deffo do it!

If you want to do teaching, its more than likely you would be training at a school like this anyway... and at least you know the little ***** here ;)

You have a head start!

Good luck with it!

You dont need to shout to make a point.

You just need to know what to say and how to say it with a firm tone.

Go to work dressed like Gordon Freeman, the minute the kids step out of line batter them with a crow bar, that should set an example to the rest of the rude boy wannabe's in the class that if they mess with the IT teacher they get opened up like a can of sardines !!!

They won't expect you to teach without any support. Have you been working in classroom already? If not perhaps you could shadow a teacher for a couple of weeks.
I would imagine that IT is a popular subject at school so you are half way there, the kids shouldn't be too much trouble.

Good Luck and enjoy.
