Scary temperatures - only just noticed

So on a whim while reading this forum and noticing a realtemp screenshot I decided to have a look at my own which ended up giving me a huge shock with this:

This looks ridiculously high and I'm not sure what the problem is. This is with an Antec 902 case and a Fenrir Titan CPU Cooler.

I think perhaps the fan on the Titan may be the wrong way around but I actually can't remember when I took it off to clean it. It's a stupid question but how do you know if you do have it on the right way *blush* (I'm a complete idiot sometimes but I'd rather ask and be right than not ask and end up having to buy a new CPU)

Also, from that SS it looks like my CPU is running at 4GHz. Is that correct or is that something different? Sometimes it drops to 2.3-3.8ish which I assume is when the load drops? (Right now its at 2.3Ghz with 1% load)

Also again, What are the long time repercussions of temperatures like this? I'm pretty sure if the fan is the wrong way around then its been like that for months at least :S If its not may it be a heat sink/paste issue?

Thanks,

Revolve.

First thing to do is get the cooler off, check the fans are the right way round (they usually have arrows on them, and generally they blow out the back), then clean down the top of the CPU and the cooler with something like Arcticlean or something alcohol-based to get the old thermal paste off properly. Then get some fresh thermal paste, MX-3, Arctic Silver 5 etc, a well known brand.

The best way to apply the new paste is a 4-5mm blob in the middle, then carefully fit the cooler, making sure it's making full contact with the CPU and it's tightened down properly.

Also, the core speed going down is just Speedstep, it's designed to save power, it's not a problem.

This should sort your temps out, even with a stock cooler you'd struggle to get temps that high! Make sure you have good airflow through the case also, getting the hot air out of the case will help temps further :)

Hi andy, thanks for the reply.

First just for future reference as to why I first suspected this is the problem here's a picture of the fan that I took - pardon the quality my phone is the only camera I had nearby.

The CE and small writing makes it look like its possibly the back to me but anyway onward to your post :)

Yeah I'm planning on moving everything into an ATCS 840 in the next few days actually so this little find came at the right moment, certainly. Reseating the CPU and everything I actually forgot about until just after typing my previous post actually so I'll make sure to do that also.

And yeah I figured the speed fluctuation was normal, I'm just surprised my CPU is clocked at 4Ghz. When I ordered this computer from OCuk it was over the phone so I don't have a copy on my account so I forgot what the clock was. Surprised me is all as I thought it was low 3Ghz.

And yeah I know, they really are high. I have a feeling the fact that my room is absolutely boiling isnt helping like, but hopefully the larger case with better cable management (Say hi to that HDD sata cable in my picture up there :)) will help also. The temps have dropped to 70-71ish since I upped my front fan speeds slightly so that might help a bit.

In the mean time I think I may have to hope it lasts. I havent had any problems with BSOD's or anything, although I'm starting to think my computers slow performance lately may not have been my HDD entirely as much as I thought if these temps could possibly affect performance :S

Anyway, thanks for the reply and I'd love to hear any more input also.

That fan appears to be the wrong way round.. it's blowing towards the front of the case by the looks of it, it wants to blow towards the back to go with the airflow of the case.

If you know how, then go into your BIOS and set the CPU back to stock settings, it should run a bit cooler then until you can get it sorted properly.

I thought it was >< Can't believe I didn't notice before now. Feel like such a fool :) I know the direction of air flow and everything, I just obviously wasn't paying attention when I reattached it, which I shall proceed to do now. Thankfully its just a clip on either side of the fan to attach it so shouldn't be a huge problem even for me.

Thanks again andy, I appreciate it.

No worries :) Although I would think it's more than just a fan causing those temperatures, so get it re-seated sooner rather than later before any damage is done!

please post back as i have a very similar setup and will be very interested in your results.

You can notice I had to disable HT to get the temps this low.

While i agree with you HNR1, i still think even with bad TIM spread those temps are indicative of poor mounting and virtually NO contact and needs remounting, the fan being reveresed is not the issue either.
