Scary traction issues...

On the way to work this morning, I was waiting to pull out of a busy junction when I noticed that traffic was at a standstill. Blocking the road was a big truck spinning it wheels when trying to set off... it just couldn't get traction at all.

After sitting there for 5 minutes, the truck finally managed to get some traction and off it went. My journey to work continued.

Driving down a back street to miss the rest of the traffic, my wheels span up in 1st (wasn't even going hard on the pedal) so I changed to 2nd and they continued to spin, so into 3rd it went. Sorted, making progress now.

Back onto the main road and upto a small roundabout at the top. Now, I've taken this at about 45mph in the dry before and had no problems. Today, I was going around it at 25 and could feel the front end starting to slip... weird I thought.

Got to the next set of traffic lights (the famous GP circuit) when there was a Golf R32 already there. I stopped behind it with a few cars in my left lane. The lights changed to green and the Golf set off rather slowly, so I did the same.

I put my foot down a little bit and changed to 2nd gear to get past the cars to my left and for some reason, my wheels span up again... I was doing 2000rpm in 2nd gear and wasn't even putting significant pressure on the pedal. Came to slow down for the traffic and the ABS kicked in as soon as I touched the pedal. Took my foot off and tried again, and the same thing happened  WTF?!?!

So, a bit further down the road, I came to another roundabout. No issues setting off there, even tried to make it spin up in 2nd by planting my foot... nothing...

Got to another smaller roundabout and had to stop half way around the roundabout due to traffic blocking my exit. Came to set off, into 1st, no problems, into 2nd and put my foot down a bit and it was just a wash of spinning wheels and people staring at my car, probably thinking "god damn boy racers"

The roads must be very greasy at the moment, so be careful guys.

Ditchfinders tbh ;)

Oh, and if your starting to break traction, back off the loud pedal!

I've found myself having to switch off TCS/ESP recently as its far too intrusive. I'll be trying to pull out onto a main road, and the ESP will just cut power, damn dangerous as i'm trying to pick up speed onto an NSL. Far easier to just control my own throttle tbh.

I've noticed some of the roads getting a bit slick.

Was in Norwich the other day walking towards one of those random bits of road that are painted red that the road planners seem to love. Well a guy in a 3 series had got in the wrong lane, saw a gap in the traffic and lit the tyres up (thought they had TC?!) I thought what a berk, thats no the best way to pull infront of traffic. I went to cross the road and nearly slipped on my bum. It was like ice

Well, yeah, they are that ;) They're getting changed after Christmas for Eagle's, but having NEVER suffered this amount of traction loss before (even when going for it in the wet) it's just an eye opener.

That's exactly what the road felt like when I was braking behind the Golf. It felt like trying to stop on snow.

 Haven't you read the post? I said when I did start to spin, I changed gear... and they continued to spin.

Bus lane? :p

Yeah very slippery, but its not much of a surprise. Mud, rain, cold, leaves, its all a cocktail of slipperyness.

The MR2s been ok, but one or 2 locations have caught me out a bit - had it rather sideways on 1 mini-roundabout without trying.

As was driving with skinny Conti "eco contacts"

With a whopping 60BHP and a light clutch I was spinning them up all over the shop :(

Bus lane?

To be fair it was a pedestrian crossing but I can't see how the fact the road is now red makes it any safer considering its now a death trap :p
