Anyone used both / run any comparisons.

I'll be needing to deploy servers and workstations / laptops quite soon. Previously used Altiris and been very impressed. Just wondering how SCCM compares.

Many thanks.

For OS deployment if you can afford it I'd personally stay away from SCCM, as much as I love it for most things the OSD side of it I've never bothered with.

Altiris seems to be good for that if you've got the cash but it was pretty pricey last time I looked at it. Circa 25k I think it might have been for just a 500 seat license.

We've used it to deploy some of our newer servers as it came bundled, and I use Ghost Solution Suite for desktops/laptops.

I think there is already a plan to buy altiris, I just wanted to make sure SCCM isn't a lot better, which from the sounds of it, it's not.

Thanks for the info :)

SCCM isn't as powerful as Altiris, it's main advantage is cost (depending on what Microsoft license agreement you are on) and the interface is a lot friendlier than Altiris although that comes at the expense of features/customisation. Version 7 of Altiris should improve things but I wouldn't go for that for at least a few months as there will doubtless be some teething problems!

For what it's worth Ev0, there is a migration path from Ghost to Altiris now that Symantec own both.

Landesk could be worth a look but if you have used Altiris before then it doesn't really do anything better other than slightly better support for Macs.

I spend roughly half my week working on Altiris so feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions :)

Yeah I knew about that path, thing is for what we use it for Altiris would be overkill really, and at least 5 times more expensive :)

I'm an SMS/SCCM techy at the moment but again I personally wouldn't use it for OS deployment, most of the other stuff it does though is great :)

For instance ghost will build a desktop for us in 5 minutes, SCCM takes a lot longer (when I was on the course they said about 40 mins?).

HP RDP is a nice tool. I know it's just Altiris but the ProLiant and Integrity features are handy if you want to extend Altiris to server deployment.

OpsWare SAS is a nice tool - Owned by HP now so it might be called something different.

Fast and configurable, also allows for more than just package deployments, can let you automate a lot of admin from a central location.

Sorry to hijack slightly but has anyone used MS BDD? We've got SCCM at the moment - works well - mainly for deployment. We're considering some branch servers too. But we run a network of 1500 machines or so and Ghost is a bit of a pain, really as we don't have much standardisation with regards to hardware.
