Hey all we need a new router that lets us schedule when wifi comes on and goes off. I.e: We don't use any wifi devices after 10:30pm so I don't want the router broadcasting wifi signal until 6:30am the next day. I still need the router and internet connection to stay on for the plugged in devices for the entire time, it's just the wifi I'm looking to turn off.

Also need the router to have a 4 port gigabit switch and be dual banded. Any recommendations or ideas?? Does such a thing even exist?

This. Why do you need to turn it off? The power savings will be minimal.

Afraid I've not seen a router with the ability to schedule interface up/down times. There is probably one somewhere though.
 
I want to turn the signal off, so we have no wifi devices on over night and aren't getting radiated by it. I do not want to debate the affects of wireless on people, I just want advice on routers that can do it :D.

Edit: Sorry that sounds snappy, thanks for the above. Googling shows up nothing but I refuse to give up. The other option is to get an additional wifi source and plug it in on a timer, then just get a router with a gigabit backbone and hook it up to that. But I am trying to reduce boxes at the mo not increase :D

Umm, wifi schedules have been around for years. Even my, now ancient, dg834gt has it. I'm 99% certain some newer netgears still have it, but anything capable of tomato/dd-wrt would also be fine - if take slightly longer. RT-N16 is the router of choice for those.

Tbh however, there's not much point in saving what will equate to roughly $2 a year, I believe, by shutting it off. The time you'd spend making it work would cost more than the saving :)

as per OP comments above, it's nothing to do with cost savings it's something silly about radiation from wifi etc:p:p
 
I know, I know :P, and yeah not doing it to save cashola. I'd rather keep the number of things plugged in lower to reduce my co2 and do my bit but this is purely to stop wifi when we don't need it.

Take a look at the AVM Fritz Box WLAN 7390. That has the dual band wireless, gig ports, and I assuming the same cunning feature that the 7270 has of being able to power down wireless between set times (my powers down between 2.30am and 5am). The other ports and internet connectivity remain up as required. You can also disable individual switchports to further increase power savings.

Its not a cheap router, but surely you weren't expecting those kind of options on a run of the mill router?
 
A cheaper option would be to keep your current router but turn off the wifi, get an access point and connect it to one of those plug-in mechanical timers set to go on and off when you want.
 
im sure i saw the option on a tenga or tplink ADSL router, the other day. most likley a tenga adsl 300mbps.. I cannot find anything after a quick google maybe worth a better search..

Im running a Netgear DG834GT with custom firmware this has wireless scheduling

I have hosted the firmware here, 1014 is the one I am currently using, 1007 is the one before that, I would stick 1014 on. Dont get any newer firmware from DGTeam though as they are buggy and can brick your router.

Cheers DJMK4 thanks for that, really like the look of the wnr3500L that's a lot nicer looking than the Fritz. Not that looks really matter.

Gonna test DG in a momento, will let you guys know how I get on and what I order. Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions!
 
Awesome - DG834GT working and scheduled!! Thanks DJMK4, buys me some time to research another router with gigabit ports.

For the record, 1012 was the last rock solid build, not 1007. I'm using 1014 like you, but it caused more than a handful of problems for some people.

Still, seems the op has it working :)
 
I heard some people were having a few dhcp issues with 1014 and I thought I has the same problem but it turned out to be a laptop issue. I don't have 1012, only the two posted plus an older 08** version. But mine runs fine on 1014:) glad it's all sorted
 
Yeah the DG834GT with DGTeam firmware has wireless scheduling under the security->schedule section.

Unless your living out in the sticks turning it off so you don't irradiate yourself is completely and utterly pointless as it will not be increasing exposure above the background radiation levels anyway.
 
We're fortunate to live in a small village by the coast in an eco house that has so much insulation we barely get a phone signal and our wifi and cordless phones don't even reach outside. Kids are on the radar which is motivating me to do my best. A gigabit switch to connect up two other gigabit switches in the home would be good and rather than a separate box I'd like to upgrade our aging router to an N. I agree the impact is minimal but since I need a new router why would I not want to do this?
