Hi All,
I thought I would start of a training log here on OcUK Forums as I enjoy reading through a lot of the threads here on the forums about sport and fitness.
Back in October 2013 one of my friends completed her first Glasgow 10K Road race... meanwhile my girlfriend and I were sitting in Chiquitos restaurant having a rather large lunch keeping track of her progress on Facebook!
We decided there and then that we would sign up for a 10K race together and see who was the fastest! The race is taking place on the 24th May in Edinburgh and its looking like it is going to be neck and neck.
So a bit of a sporting history or background if you like about me. I am a pretty competitive squash and tennis player, and play a bit of five a sides also. I have dabbled in the past with some weight lifting routines, things like Stronglifts 5x5 and other various beginner bodybuilding routines. Couple this with various different attempts at changing my diet for the better (not going on a diet, changing my diet!) I currently weigh in around 102 KG at a height of 5'11.
So... why am I telling you about a 10K road race in May of this year when the title of this thread is Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris 2015? Well you guessed it... I have a confirmed entry for the 2015 Paris Marathon!! Now you need to understand that until I began training for the Edinburgh 10K I had never ran more than 2KM outside before. I hated running... didn't mind running after a football, squash ball or a tennis ball but I couldn't imagine anything more mind numbing than just running around the streets back home. I am now a changed man.
Training for the 10K has revealed a deeply buried love for running, spending a nice hour by myself on the pavements of hometown Bathgate with nothing but my own thoughts for company. I enjoy the sense of clarity that comes with a run, I am able to untangle problems at work and life when I am pounding the streets and I come home with a sense of achievement after most training runs. Out there I am competing against myself instead of on a court against an opponent. I have went from having no interest at all about running to owning a nice Garmin 310XT GPS Watch, a Strava account (godsend) and various pieces of running apparel! I quickly knew that the 10K was going to be an easy challenge with training runs exceeding this distance already... I knew that I needed a bigger challenge to set my mind too and while I was initially thinking IronMan, I know that I do not have the time required for training to do it justice right now. I have settled on doing a progressive schedule for the next 12 months instead... Ironman will be next, I am sure of it!
This log on OcUK will be used to track my progress in terms of distance, speed, events, weight loss and any cross training I will be doing.
I will be doing the following training plans for the two main races
Half Marathon Training Guide - Intermediate Program - 12 Weeks Plan Followed by a slightly altered
Marathon Training Guide - Personal Best - 30 week on route to the Paris Marathon
Alongside the dedicated run programmes I will be cross training with Squash, Tennis and Five A Side Football and also some CrossFit for general fitness and core strength. I am NOT interested in getting into a debate about CrossFit and its reputation / issues as I am very happy with the instructors I am working with in terms of Form Development and safety. Our first 'On Ramp' session was over two hours and focused on Squat and Deadlift Form with some video analysis included in the session and since then it has been a continuous development of these techniques and how to perform them safely and effectively. In terms of equipment available the crossfit box in my town puts the council gym to shame.
So here is a look at my race schedule as its stands - I will be popping in some smaller events I reckon during the 30 week marathon (well 26/27 weeks) training so I will update as and when.
24th May 2014 - Edinburgh - 10K
5th October 2014 - Glasgow - Half Marathon
12th April 2015 - Paris - Marathon
