So, school detentions, what do we think to these?

Should they be dished out willy nilly for all and sundry "offences" no matter how small or should they be reserved for proper bad things you do?

Back when I was at school a detention was a big thing and you had to do something bad to get one.

The background to this topic?

My son who started high school this September lost his locker key on Friday, he tried to get another one today but needed £5 to replace it, fine, no issue but he didn't have the money to pay there and then,he then had to take his PE kit to science after he had PE because he couldn't get in his locker, what happens, the science teacher gives him a 15 minute detention....

This seems heavy handed to me and totally overkill, he tried to explain but his teacher was having none of it and just said no excuses...

That sounds pretty OTT to me, I'd be demanding a report from the science teacher detailing exactly what the detention was given for. (With full Oxford referencing if I was feeling particularly vindictive :p)

That was my initial thought too, obviously there is the lesson here to look after your things (the locker key) as if he didn't lose that this wouldn't have happened, but I can't help but think it's very heavy handed.

Thats pretty stupid... I didn't even get a detention for pinching stuff from the IT room when I was at school, I just got told to bring it back. :p

Detention doesn't teach kids to behave or change their ways if they are dished out willy nilly.

15 minute detention, is that even worth it? Back when I was at school it was either half an hour or an hour. And that was spent sat in a room with an angry teacher that didn't want to be there, so woe betide anyone who decided to step out of line.

Sounds crazy to me. Detention was only given out at my school for something pretty bad or regularly forgetting homework.

Yep. That was my experience of detention at school.

....Don't lose the key? :p

:D

Oh no! Someone tried to discipline my child! I shall now complain about it.

Suck it up. The boy might learn something from it.

Might not, in which case next time could be half an hour.

I'm guessing you either didn't read the thread, or have no idea of the purpose of discipline.

That's harsh OP. I lost my locker key too in the mid-90s in the 5th year (now known as year 11). £5 for a replacement. Didn't have the money that day, so came in with it a day later. Job's a good 'un.

As for me, I did get maybe 4 or 5 detentions for not doing homework.

P.S. why do some people call it high school? Everyone here in Staffordshire seems to call it that, but where I was brought up in Shropshire, we called it secondary school.

Because a lot of places operate a three tier system.

U wot m8?? I have no problem with the school disciplining my son for worthwhile things, this just seems OTT.

No idea, that's what I've always called "secondary school" and that's what everyone else in Leicester called it.
