I finally got around to replacing my beta version of Vista SP1 today - I hadn't done it to date due to the hassle of needing to uninstall it first before installing the new one.

However, after waiting a good half an hour to uninstall it, and then another half an hour to install the final version, I checked in system properties and found that it still listed the same version number as before (668, rather than just SP1).

Yes, in classic numpty fashion I discovered I had run the wrong executable from my drivers dir when installing SP1 again - I figured because it was called "wave1" rather than "wave0", and was also a larger file size, that it was the later version. I just assumed and didn't check the datestamp!

What made it doubly annoying is that it meant I had to go through the whole process again - a prolonged un-install process before I could even begin installing the correct SP.

Anyone else done something as stupid?

I once slipstreamed a beta version of sp3 for windows xp, instead of the proper version. that was rather anoying. i think i did the same for vista now i think about it.

installed XP x64 on a clients computer without checking for the availability of drivers for his wireless adapter.

then i had to play "hunt the driver" on the internet, which took HOURS... :(

I'm quite a risk-taker when it comes to Windows, beta updates/drivers/software etc doesn't bother me. The one exception was the beta version of directx8 which I didn't think was worth the risk.

The realistic worst case scenario would be that I would have had to reinstall Windows, which is no biggy. Having a test install would just take up more of my time :)
