Scientists have created an ultra-fast computer chip which is 20 times faster than current desktop computers.

Modern PCs have a processor with two, four or sometimes 16 cores to carry out tasks.

But the central processing unit (CPU) developed by the researchers effectively had 1,000 cores on a single chip.

The developments could usher in a new age of high-speed computing in the next few years for home users frustrated with slow-running systems.

Not even worth reading the article. The Daily Fail and co churn out these anti-scientific stories every time there's a slow news day. xxx causes/cures cancer. Boffins create xxxx which will cure xxxx/make xxxx faster by a factor of y.

Picture desc:

"A woman sits in front of a slow-running laptop. The chip developed by the researchers was able to process around five gigabytes of data per second in testing taking it approximately 20 times faster than modern computers"

Well, slow-running laptop needs 5 GB of data per second to be quick. Congrats, 5 GB is about a weekly internet download transfer (what else can woman @ laptop do ? :p), do they think about such "great" comment before publish ? ;-)

It's a field-programmable gate array. For those not in the know, essentially they've taken a processor and reprogrammed it in a very complex way for an increase in performance.

It's pretty well known that you can reconfigure processors for a performance boost, but I'm not convinced we're going to see massive leaps in performance from this, of the order of twenty times. Realistically, Intel and AMD will take a look at this and have another think about the way they program their CPUs, and we may possibly see a boost, but they need to configure for typical desktop use, not lab tests.

Also, I hate to go with argument ad hominem, but The Halk is right. The Daily Mail isn't the most intellectual of newspapers by a long way.
