Seeing as, once again, the miniature zealous wacko named Tom Cruise and his brainwashed wife Katie Holmes are back in the eye of the media, I thought this would be an appropriate time to bring up the subject of their ''religion''.

I'd wager that the majority on this forum consider Scientology a bizarre, perhaps somewhat manipulative cult which preys on the minds of the weak. However, having had a discussion on the subject with a friend the other day, he sent me some links which, though I can't verify their impartiality or source, shed new light on my knowledge.

Essentially, they portray Scientology as more than a stupid, vaguely amusing cult run by American fundamentalists. The order itself is divided into levels, I being the lowest and VIII being the highest. Apparently, once one reaches level VII of the organisation (usually attained by capacious/extortionate donations) the whole faith is revealed as a scam, and the real aims of the level VIII's (those at the highest echelons of Scientology, residing mainly at the ''PAC base'' in California) become apparent: namely that the organisation is built around manipulating and scamming people out of their assets, and attempting to build towards their ultimate target - the foundation of a Scientology world order in a kind of ''illuminati'' vein.

This may seem a bit far-fetched, but with the kind of people who run this organisation and the dreamland they appear to inhabit, it wouldn't surprise me in the least. The following links are quite shocking in places. They appear to present the leaders of Scientology for what they are: pseudo-Machiavellian con-artists who survive only due to their highly-developed ability to brainwash people and the aid of a watertight legal team.

A revealing video...

Apparently written by a former level VII:

It's not the crazy beliefs you have to worry about, it's the times when they've had members who've wanted to leave, and they've subsequently imprisoned and mal-treated until they basically died. Google for Lisa McPherson.

Aside from killing people, you also have to worry about the largish town in florida where Scientology have basically the entire police force on the payroll.

Once suitably concerned about that, then you can worry about the crazy space-alien belief system.

nope, and infact if you came from another planet and observed earthlings with religious impartiality you would have to question what the hell christianity is all about, and what the hell do its followers believe really happened back then/

I'd urge you not to consider the beliefs so much, but rather the way in which Scientology today conducts itself. It seems overwhelmingly oppressive and manipulative, charges that can't, in my opinion, be levelled at the majority of Christian denominations.

Jesus turned water to wine - either he is french or an irish man

Fed 5000 people with few fishes and loaf of bread - He will make a good vice chacellor of the exchequer.

He walked on water - better illusionist than david blaine.

He fakes his own death - Even makaveli has nothing on him

He will come back - A good magician, always leave his fans wanting more..

Ok this has no relevance but i thought i should say it lmao. :D

EDIT
He was born of the virgin mary - Either Joseph is gay or mary was messing about.

just think if it wasnt for Emperor Constantine, Jesus may have remanined as an inspirational leader of men, and possibly been seen as a profit, more akin Ghandi, or similar, instead of becoming part of the holy trinity.

remember Jesus was only made holy by vote, and it wasnt a vote showing consensus!

I had a 10 minute read up of scientology a while back and this is what I remember the religion is based on a book by L. Ron Hubbard - a Sci-Fi writer!!

In that religion:

Aliens flew around the galaxy in spacecraft that look like old DC8's.

Xanu, an alien leader, transported the soles of aliens to the Earth and deposited them near volocanos 75 million years ago.. then blew them up with hydrogen bombs :D

So, on the whole, no more credible than any other religion.

all religions are pretty stupid but scientology is really really stupid - i mean come on, this stuff was written by a science fiction author, a man who went to jail for fraud....hello poeple.........

oh yeah, all hail xenu.

I watched a programme on Ch4 when a journalist went to a Scientology camp to experience 'auditing'.

It was brilliant, he was a smart man but the psychological 'therapy' they played on him got his trust and found his emotional weaknesses. It showed how easily a person could be made to be dependent on an organisation and it was done with such skill. Absolutely phenomenal to watch.

i still dont get it, the guy was a science fiction writer, he then created a religion involving aliens and spaceships and now people are paying money for it. a writers dream no?

Maybe it's due to so many Hollywood "stars" being into it that's giving it more credibility than the mainstream religions?

The only thing I know is that I'm not slagging off any religion as knowing my luck I'll have to answer to the <great deity> having annoyed it for my entire life. :o

Do you remember what it was called? Was his experience filmed or was it just interviewing him afterwards? It sounds interesting :)

Hubbard was also quoted as saying "If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion.", before he started Scientology.

It's unbelievable to me that people fall for it, but as CBS said, it's amazing what people can do to people if they have the know-how and the will to do it.

There was a BBC 5 live radio documentary about how they sent a reporter into a London meeting where the members were openly talking about how they walked around after 7/7 offering leaflets to the victims urging them not to get psychiatric help for any post-traumatic stress disorder.

Scientology spokesperson denied that this ever happened (they had recordings of it happening, which they aired) and then proceeded to accuse the psychiatrist they had on the show of having a conviction for kidnapping of a child.

All scientologists are taught from the beginning that anyone who criticizes must be a criminal. Hence you'll see a bunch of video-documentaries floating around the net of people confronting scientologists only for them to rave "What are your crimes?" at them in return.

Thankfully, I think their numbers are dwindling. I live two blocks from their main 'church' here in New York. Propaganderous place. Not that that's a word..... :)
