For some reason, I can't get regexp search/replace working in scite. If I try and do a search for "\n" (no quotes) and check "Regular expression", it keeps complaining that it can't find the string "\n". Sometimes I need to do things like replace \n\n with just \n, and this is turning out to be impossible in scite. Any ideas?

Have you ticked the "Transform backslash expressions" box? That's the one you need for picking up \n and so on.
