Anyway I can monitor an ESXi 4 and 4.1 server (the physical server) using SCOM. All HP servers, so any failure of disks are monitored and then alerted

If you want to monitor the hardware then you want to be plugging into iLO and not the hypervisor.

There are a few options;

1.) latest oneview management pack, if you are utilising oneview?
2.) HP Proliant Management Pack, utilises the HP insight management agent information
3.) Veeam can monitor all aspects of VMware and Physical information to some degree
