Scooter question!!!

Yes, get a scooter if you're commuting. So much easier to get through the traffic and more storage space.

That is a massive assumption. The OP has already indicated a preference for speed, and a scooter isn't going to give him that.

The commute distance is unknown. If it was 1 mile, the scooter justification could come into it, but even then it is dubious. As an example, I commute around 4 miles to work every day. I've done it on a scooter, a 125 and my current bike, a 650. The scooter's quickest journey was 14 minutes; the 125 9 minutes and the 650 7 minutes. I've found it a close run thing between the 125 and the 650 on average, but with the maximum speeds availabe on the route being 40 and 30, there isn't a contest between the bike and the scooter. Storage is moot without any additional information.

As for performance, at the discussed level, a 2 stroke will always win the day. I used to have a Speedfight 2, and you could get 55 mph out of it on a level surface. In comparison, my 'old' Varadero 125 (4 stroke) would be beaten by other 125 2 stroke machines.

It will come down to budget and what you ultimately want. If you want to ride, you'll go through your test, and get the right bigger bike for you. If you want to stick on a 125, you'll do the same and if you want speed, you'll end up on a 2 stroke.

If you want to stick on a scooter because you want to put your lid under the seat, you'll end up with a scooter.

Persil is spot on so please dont listen to SGCWill

Rule of thumb is a deristicted 125cc 2t [ sports ] will be just as fast bottom end and only a bit down on top end as a 250cc 4t [sports ]

The same goes for 250cc 2t against a 400 4t ie just as fast bottom end and faster in some cases , and maybee 5 mph down on top end
i even won the ramsey sprint over the isle of man up against 2 400 4t's on my rgv 250

as for carrying oil around with you thats tosh SGCWill i rode to heysham just the other side of liverpool from london on my way to the IOM tt on my little 2t on one tank of oil , that was a good 3 tanks of fuel on that trip :)

cant say that i have had much to do with 2 strokes since i had my last motocross bike, but surely a 4 stroke, although less power, is just easier and nicer to ride for a commute? the OP says nothing about going racing!

Would'nt say easyer just got to change gear abit more and of course no engine braking on the 2t
the 4t might be a bit nicer to ride but not as much fun either
used to ride my 250 all year round rain wind and snow

One thing i should have said is 2 strokes tend to require more maintenance . I cant speak for scooters as never owned one but on the more common "sports" 125's top end rebuilds are a 10k-12k regular job . They will go longer if yer easy with the throttle but in general they start to loose there edge at 12kish .

I am in the middle of rebuilding my lads Dtr125 (dont ask) and the top end rebuilds are easy enough and can be done in an afternoon (Piston/rings/small end bearing and gaskets) and cost about £100 all in to do .

Im guessing scooters will last abit more given there low end tune but would need to be done eventually .

4 strokes tend to just need oil and petrol and the odd plug but are pretty relaible unless thrashed where bottom ends start to rummble .

I dont think there is a lot of difference as far as scooters are concerned although someone with more knowledge than me with scooters could tell you more but a 2 stroke should be a bit quicker to 60 on a 125 ped i would guess. .

Hope this helps

Persil

Yes well put persil about 12k sounds about correct

most people go on about 2t's not being reliable but that aint the case if they are looked after and kept stock [ deristricted is still stock ]

most problems with them seem to be young lads who have tuned them to within an inch of death lol

4 strokes are just the same when you start tuneing them ie they wont be as reliable

Thanks for your reply's. At this present moment I don't want a bike and a Scooter better suits my needs, won't be going futher than 10miles and I think they are pretty cool. As everywhere 125cc license alows, as in dual carriage ways and that. So I am looking at only going 60mph, so I would prefer something with faster acceleration. Thats why I was looking at a 100c Peugeot Speedfight 2! If anyone knows of any other Scooters that fit that description then I am open for ideas. What are obvious signs of a Scooter/Bike that has been ragged btw???
