Adults in Scotland are drinking the equivalent of 46 bottles of vodka each in a year, a study has suggested.

The research was based on industry sales data analysed by NHS Health Scotland.

It said sales for the year to September 2009 averaged 12.2 litres of pure alcohol per person over the age of 18.

The Scottish government said the figure, which had remained static since 2005, was the equivalent of 537 pints or 130 bottles of wine per person.

Remember this is an average. There are a lot of English in Scotland working on the theft of the last of their oil before we cut them loose. Many Scots will be drinking far more than this.

Frankly, who could blame them ? If i were Scottish i'd want an escape too.

And?

Really find all the alcohol news related stuff funny

It's their choice.

I can guarantee that the amount bought does not equal the amount drank, everybody over compensates all the time. :p

But really, who cares? Alcohol is taxed right? :p

If we take the average bottle of vodka to be 28 units then that works out at only 24.77 units of alcohol per week, considering the recommended max is 21 units, its not that bad.

So is this meant as a congratulatory thread to the Scots who are punching well above their weight here in terms of keeping the drinks industry flowing? If that's the case then well done guys and girls, I'm heartened to see that you're doing your bit for the British economy.

I probably drink about 56 bottles of whiskey a year, including nights out. Still manage to function just fine, and haven't turned Scottish as far as I'm aware.
