Scrap speed cams, create distance cameras

I have given this idea some thought and frankly in my view, motorway bridge speed cameras are just stupid. Having been caught twice now on an empty motorway I feel there are better ways to reduce accident rates.

My idea is just this: anti-tailgating cameras. The electronics would be so simple, just time the distance between two cars and if less than 2 seconds (probably set the trigger at 1.8 for fairness) then issue a penalty.

Would never work.

We just need more traffic police on the roads hauling people up for driving like idiots.

Great in principle but it would be tricky and confusing to implement. For instance, it would clearly have to be speed dependant. Who comes up with approriate distance/time/speed? Obviously the time would be relative to the speed but stopping distances at higher speeds would also have to be taken into account.

What if the car in front of you brakes suddenly, forcing you closer to their bumper? The distances would have to be averaged over a long period to prevent this and I don't see how multiple cameras could accurately collaborate to do this?

Unfortunately speeders are an easy target/scapegoat :(.

That's quite a silly idea, no offence :) Totally unworkable.

Got to a gree with you Nozzer, 100% bang on with that statement.

Far to many people on the road, who quite frankly, shoud not be ;)

We have Speed laws for reasons, despite what most people think laws are to be obeyed and not broken. ;)

I tend to speed a fair bit, and on occasion i have tailgated dawdling idiots infront of me, and even id agree if we all stuck to the limit we would see the motorways move much more smoothly.

Generally in speed controlled roadworks the traffic moves very smoothly, even on the bloody M6.

You would have even more people randomly jamming their brakes on in a queue of traffic then.

As noz said, the solution is police.
