My girlfriends cat attempted to use my car as a method of getting through an upstairs window, the result is a group of scratches down to primer on my passenger door.

I can't afford to have the car sprayed at the moment so I was going to touch it up myself and hope for the best.

My understanding is that I will need to:

  • Clean the scratch
  • Paint the scratch until paint is level
  • Lacquer the area
  • Polish

Does this sound right?

The car is pretty swirl covered so I was going to get a random orbital and some pads and machine polish it with a light cutting compound anyway, would I get good results from this?

 That's impressive, you don't mean cat do you?

I've never seen a repair done with touch ups before, only ever stone-chips and the likes, and it's usually clear they've been done.

Don't take my word for this, but I believe with a touch up pen the idea is to fill the scratch, using fine wet and dry sand the raised paint it back level and then use a cutting compound.

Damn, was hoping with a bit of work they'd be near enough invisible, I guess a lot of it depends on how close the colour match is and how much better I can make the original paintwork look.

Doctor Colour Chip is by far the best product I have ever used for getting rid of deep scratches. it removed a load of scratches on my old Focus to the point of struggling to find where they were to show people how good it was. It was a group buy on here a while back and certainly well worth it!

Thinking about it I need to order one for the new car.

Did you manage to get Doctor Colour Chip in this country? Or did you order it from the US site?

After using all sorts of 'touch up kits', I'd say your best bet is to get a pot of touch up paint (pre-mixed with lacquer) from paints4u.com. Comes with a small artists paint brush too.

Carefully fill the scratch so it's just proud of the surface, then ask a bodyshop/ detailer to wet sand it, then buff the paint.

I have used these people, the kits are excellent, imo. I would guess that it will depend on the condition of the rest of the paint because of fade or whatever but the kit I had from them was spot on for the colour code I provided.
