as above..

just bought a 7950gt for 30quid for a tf2 box

it screams when it's in 3d mode

i can try another motherboard and psu with it tomorrow, is it likely the card is just knackered?

i've got a '30 day warranty' with the seller

hmm ok

my 7900gt never made a noise, and this is louder than my 8800gt

only does it when in 3d mode though

3dmark 2001 23397
3dmark 2006 4825

opteron 146 @2ghz (stock)
512mb 400ddr
7950gt

look ok?

Some cards are like this - usually worse the higher the fps so turning on vsync and limiting to 60fps _might_reduce it.

Don't get it on my 260GTX tho some have reported it - but I do get a whistling noise in the headphones if the card is pumping out 1000+fps in 3D stuff thats fairly light weight.

My 8800GT had it.
8800GTS 640 had it
2900XT had it
4870 has it.

It's not faulty unless the 7900 series do it then expload which aint surprising as they had a high failure rate.

yeah

it was a new/sealed card, seemed to do it a lot less in 3d mark than the nvidia demo i tried

My 8800GT does it in very specific circumstances........by very specific I mean it only does it in some XNA game engine situations (parallax mapping I believe :/) everything else and I never hear a peep.

My 8800ultra done it in my system, when i put it into my brothers build it does it in his.

My bfg 260gtx does it but not as loud and im awaiting a point of view 260gtx coming today, which no doubt will end up doing it :P lol

Shall see what my bfg's replacement card will be like once ive sent it off.

Whatever this is it doesn't sound right.

Are you sure it's a capacitor? If it is, this is normally means that it is "venting" and on it's way to failing, but this would only take minutes or hours at the most to fail, quite often with a loud bang and tell tale buts of debris around *** board and inside your case :o

I would guess it's more likely to be an inductor, where the coil vibrates at high freqency and gives off an annoying high pitched whine. This itself will not necessarily be a reliability concern, but something you should legitimately be able to get a replacement for.

all 3 of my 8800gtx's do it, but only under certian loads,
Running crysis maxed out i get nothing,
folding on all of them = high pitched squeal from each. (though its not noticable unless i turn off all the fans.)

Its gotta be throwing off quite a lot of EMI aswell as the noise induces a squeal on my speakers aswell (only audible if nothign else is being played)

Both the GTX 260's i've had did this. Only when the card's running some crazy high resolution in menus does it do it. Stalker is a particularly good example of this. Also, ATi tool causes screeching too.

When in game and at normal FPS the noise vanishes or is barely noticeable.

I wouldn't worry about it TBH. :)

Makes it sound like a siren, can play tunes with it by adjusting fps levels on games/menus lol

For the record, i've just put my pov 260gtx in and doing exactly the same noises at same menus/screens as the bfg is/was :P

Interesting, are you sure it's the card?

I've had PSU's that make electrical noise when under heavy load but never a card itself.
