Has anyone ever heard of this?

Got me a nice pair of Asus GTX 275s with a lovely 4GHz bundle from OC :D and fittied it all up on Saturday but yesterday (Sunday) while loading up Crysis there was this almighty screeching noise.

I then tried one card at a time while loading up Crysis and the screech was there. I tried my EVGA GTX 260 and that screeched aswell which it didnt before.

Also when I scroll webpages ,especially white backgrounds, there is like this strange high pitch noise coming from the PC.

Im can't work out if I have gone mental or something is actually going on. :p

Any help would be appreciated. :)

Cheers,

It's capacitor squeal which unfortunately is very common. It's most noticeable loading games like you said as the loading screen is often rendered at something stupid like 2000FPS. I used to get a wired noise when scrolling web pages on my old GTX280, it's nothing harmful, just a general annoyance.

Ye this is very common and it is very annoying. It's not harmful and you will just notice it when there is a high amount of FPS on your screen.

Very common, lots of threads on this occurring with both graphics cards and PSUs.

It doesn't indicate a fault with the card but it is very annoying.

As stated, really common. Just google for *your GFX model* & *squeal/whine/buzz*.

Forums all over the place have definitions and explanations of what causes it, typically a coil resonating, or caps squealing.

Some people end up going through RMA after RMA and still have cards that squeal.

You can try forcing VSync at all times, that can limit the squealing, but not get rid of it.

Seems odd that the 260 didn't screech before and now it does...

Could it be a mb bios or driver issue?

I guess I've been lucky and never had a problem with screeching. Hopefully I'm not tempting fate by typing that!

---> goes to check PC quickly!!

heard one rumer that the powersupply could be the item that is causing the gpu to scream

That is true, the PSU could be the issue. It is suprising that after using the new cards, it now makes the old card squeal as well.

Squeal will be coming from the caps, or the coil(s). That could come from the PSU or the cards. Looking at the specs however "Enermax Galaxy 1000W EGX1000EWL", that should be perfectly capable of handling the two cards.

The general trend with squealing, is you either live with it, RMA your card until you get a card that doesn't squeal, RMA your card and get a replacement that does the same, or get very lucky and get a non squealing card in the first place.

There have been reports of cards settling down, and getting quieter, sometimes stopping squealing altogether. It is really just a matter of how tolerant you are of what is essentially a problem that ATI / nvidia should be addressing.

well it might not be the fact its under powered or anything.

my PC squeals sometimes, not all the time particauly if I kick it (not intensonily just catch it)

could also perhaps be that the cards are not getting enough juice(this would explain the problem when you went back to your old card.

I say this as I had a squeel when I added a second 8800gt. Think I must've knocked something. totally horrendous noise ensued, leading to frantic switchings off etc. I noticed a little red light on back end of MOBO near PCI slot had lit up. I gave 8800gt a bit of a prod, and had a general wiggle of all the cables light went out, all was fine.

later found out that most likely culprit was the PCI-e power cable, my PSU is modular and It looks like I must've disledged slightly the PSU end of the connector.

Might not be a solution, but worth a wiggle, you never know

I was about to say, make sure your connectors are in properly, if they are slightly out then it can squeal. I have heard that too much load on the 12v line can cause the problems.

Just an update. I moved the PSU outside the case further from the GFX card. The load noise im hearing is coming from the PSU, although the noise also comes from the GFX aswell but at a level that you wouldnt notice if you had the case closed.

Forcing Vsync on pretty much eliminated the noise.

I have a Enermax Evolution 85+ coming today, I will see if the issue occurs with this one.

Update. I installed the Evolution 85+ 1050w and there no noise coming from the PSU when I load Crysis. You can hear the GFX cards making a little noise during the intro but with the case shut I dont notice it. Thanks for all the advice from peeps on here. Now onto my next query.....i920temps :D
