Hello i've had my parents computer up and running for a while running first on Vista 64bit and now W7 64bit but everytime i restart it, it loads a black screen upon reboot and as far as i can tell it doesnt boot into windows.

Any ideas?

Is the screen on? sorry. couldn't resist.

Have there been any hardware changes at all? could always try a bios reset from the motherboard itself

Have there been any hardware changes at all? could always try a bios reset when you can finally get into it.

Tried that and there has never been a hardware change.

It does it with the onbaord VGA and the ATI 4770 as well.

What sort of cooler is on the CPU?
I only ask as I get this occasionaly with the Ultra-120 I've got. It's in a tower and so is 'hanging' out from the board, now sometimes (usually if the PC has been switched off for a while and has cooled down), on boot it won't POST, (diag LED on board stays at - - ).
First few times it happened I was checking RAM etc , reseating with no joy, then eventually after being on for a while it would POST on reset.
I've narrowed it down and I think the heatsink is pulling/flexing the board/socket etc slightly, but it's so marginal that when it's warmed up it's usually OK for days on end (PC is hardly ever off, and when I'm not actively using it it's running Seti@Home).
Now I just need to apply the lightest touch to the top of the heatsink to get it to POST, then once up and running it's fine.
Might be something to check if it's not posting at all, maybe remove and redo the CPU and cooler..

When you say restart, do you mean switch on? or it runs fine then once you restart it stays black?
I'd go simple:
have you got another monitor you can test with it?

The CPU is using just the standard one supplied with the E5200.

When i turn it on it works fine, but when i restart it from windows it wont load back up again, no bios or anything.

Ive also tried another monitor.

So no POST beep. Do the fans fire up?

Yer the fans fire up no post beep as far as i can remember.

Try opening up the case, then leave it on for a bit. Then use infrared thermometer to find out if any of the components are cold, that way you could determine if any of the components are not working, stopping it from posting.

I would also recommend running a barebones system to help determine which/if a component is at fault. It should consist of:
  • Mobo
  • HDD (i think)
  • 1 stick of RAM (try swapping)
  • Onboard graphics
  • CPU
  • PSU

I think thats right, correct me if I'm wrong please!!
