I learnt something new today after finding what appeared to be marks on my Hazro! turned out not to be marked but instead what then appeared to be screen burn under where the Vista sidebar sits:

After some Googling I came across the correct term and type, Image Persistence.

:o

My screen is in use pretty much all day and on most nights I forget to turn it off before going to bed resulting in a static desktop being displayed the while time. I've since re-enabled the screensaver :) so much for not needing it eh :p

I know it's not a screen damaging issue like Screen Burn and you can restore it to its original image using the methods described on the Wiki but it's a bit annoying when it's there!

Wow, thats really rotten.

My mother had somehtign very similar a few months back and you could see her AOL page fairly clearly.

I cured it by saving out a white block in MSPAINT and using that as the screensaver after 15 minutes but then the Monitor switches off after half an hour, and I told her to NEVER turn the monitor off herself and let the PC do it... It got better and better every day and a week or two later and the monitor was cured.

At the time no.

My mother is slow as anything on the computer... She is the kind of person who uses the one index finger and every time she presses a button, she circles around it and homes in on it to press it... Im sure you know the type... Well, she often goes off to make a brew between every other word and she got fed up of having to "Wiggle the Pointy thing" when the "Computers TV had switched itself off".

So, when I showed her about it for the first time, I set it to 15 minutes but she then learned what to do, and disabled it completely, which is what caused it to stay there.

Love the siggy BTW

Does the monitor not go into a power saving mode?

It does but only if the OS is set to do so (it is by default) but I actually set auto turn off display to off in vista and set no screensaver as I was not thinking and didn’t anticipate manually turning it off would be forgotten during sessions of mild insomnia :p

I’ve now set a white screensaver to cover the whole screen after 5 mins of non activity then after 15 mins turn the display off completely.

This should cure the problem after a week or so and restore uniformity to my 24” aluminium friend :-)

Excellent. I'm glad you found a quick and easy solution (a rarity in this field...)!

I'm wondering if my HP LP2475w has a form of this image persistance problem out of the box. As you may have heard, there is a slight horizontal colour inconsistency (from green to red) on many of these monitors. I'll be calling HP in to sort it out, but I figure it wouldnt hurt to try this first.

Did you use a full-white screensaver? If so, how long did you leave it running?

I just turned it off before going to bed and not turning it on until I came home from work at 8pm :p

Seems it's quite common on TFT screens used all the time though most peeps won't notice it!

The screen has been on all night and right now the area under the Vista side bar is showing a more fainter version of the OP so it looks like it does come back...then goes away again after the pixels have settled.

Not a major issue really I suppose unless you leave it on all day long so the pixels have no rest time!

Pretty straight-forward fix then. Effortless, in fact. :D

It didnt quite work to my favour with the HP though, and neither did the white-screen tactic. I dont think my problem qualifies as "image persistance"; it's almost like someone's spray-painted the outer-coating of the screen with extremely faint green and red tints... ah well.

IPS panels have always suffered more than TN and PVA from image persistence, it's gotten a lot better though (the old 23" panels seemed very prone to it from what I heard).
