Hi all i had a dell 2407 rev 04
which has just died ,so im on the lookout for a new screen

now i would like to keep the price down as much as poss [just back from florida ouch]
but i loved my dell

im just thinking that being three years old ,have screens moved on much as so the new tn screens just as good as my dell
or is there still a gap

i use my comp say 80% games
20% internet surfing

so games is a priority

i also sit nearly straight onto my screen so viewing angles is not nearly a problem

i would like a 24 inch screen again ,but would be willing to go either higher [nice]
or even drop to 23 for the right screen

thanks for help in advance

Go for the IPS panel Dell one...

I have the same one as the one it died on you, have you not checked the warranty just in case?

I am planning on selling mine to upgrade to that one.

its out mate only by a few months
which dell were you thinking off

What kinda games do you play? if its mostly FPS games then you should consider a 120Hz panel - otherwise the dell is a good shout (I'm assuming hes talking about the Dell Ultrasharp U2410).

yes quite a bit of fps new black ops on the way
also a bit of coh

how can i tell if its a 120hz panel

i think your right with the dell but its expansive just for games [although i spent more on the 2407]

How did you find FPS gaming on your Dell? The modern IPS monitors such as the U2410 and U2311H are considerably more responsive than your ex-monitor (an S-PVA panel) and in my opinion should satisfy your requirements nicely. You'll probably find the overall image quality on a 120Hz monitor (they are all 'TN' panels) rather disappointing considering how long you have used the 2407 for so I would advise against this. You can tell if they are 120Hz if they say in the specifications or rabbit on about "3D". They are few and far between at the moment and it will be quite obvious if it's a 120Hz monitor you're looking at from the title I would expect.

Unless its advertised as 120Hz it won't be. Theres only a few on the market atm - avoid the Acer 120Hz as most people I know who have bought that have either had to RMA it 2-3 times before getting a screen they were happy with or just returned it to get something else.

i didnt find it a problem at all to be honest ,but like you said i would be used to it
i just didnt want to fork out a lot of money for the u2410 at the mo but on the other hand i dont want to look at the screen thinking damn i should have got the dell

i was hopeing that things would have moved on the the tn panels ,since there half price

Well, I am going to be selling my Dell 2407WFP soon to get the IPS model whilst mine is still alive! :) Mine went out of warranty in september but I am a bit unhappy about running such an expensive item without warranty, I could sell it now, make some dosh and move on to a newer dell with the warranty :)

In my opinion, that is silly money, get yourself a 27 inch iiayma or hanns for half the price.

Then rejoice that you haven't paid 200% more for a 10% better screen.

A monitor three times the price will never be three times the performance, unless the first comparison is horrible for whatever reason. The law of diminishing returns is always around.

I went from a Dell 2405 to the Hanns.G 27.5". Its awesome everything is a massive step up & for the price its a bargain. Why pay more for a screen which will not look much different!

I went for the iiayma 27 myself, but that's by the by, they are awesome gaming monitors for an incredible price. Why anyone would spend more than twice as much on a smaller screen just does not compute with me.

Especially considering we see a fair few threads about so called high end monitors needing to be rma'd for various reasons.

To be fair all of the incidents I have known of where people have RMA'd their monitors have been with the 120Hz varieties. Some of them have gone through several, some finally ending up with a product they were satisfied with, some of them opting for other solutions. For the U2410, if anything, the warranty is very much a boon as they will take it back with even one dead pixel, something that will happen to the unfortunate no matter what the display.

For myself, I know that I do not always value size when it comes to my monitors. For quite a few games, I would rather not go up to 27'' for example.

jees now i even more stumped

this does now seem nice i have a decent card 5950 Hanns.G HZ281HPB 27.5" Widescreen LCD Monitor

Hmm yes point taken, its a pretty full on experience with fps games, on the other hand, rts games are simply bigger and better. It does take a while to get used to a 27, fps games really will send you dizzy at first, but your brain will quickly peripheralise the extra data.

Thats probably not an actual word but hey.

Just to add, there are some etailers who will charge a small fee for a pixel check, which is unethical (woe betide people who buy a shelf price monitor from said place as they are probably guaranteed a dead pixel) but that's a different subject.
Stuck/dead pixels are actually quite rare in reality.

now tha dell has been reduced its hard to resist

but on the other hand so has the ilyama

and the hanns can be found for under £220 delivered
