Screen capture software?

I want to do some instructional videos for a family member and would like some screen capture software. I'm not sure if that's what you call it but I just want to record everything that's on my screen if possible?

Ideally freeware is such a thing exists? although I don't mind paying a little for the right piece of software

Can specify screen, region of screen or window within screen, allows use of your own codec, ie use something better than windows for nice compression and filesize

If you're using Windows 7 hit start then type:

psr

This will allow you to record a step by step guide, converts it to HTML and saves it in a zip file. It literally shows you click by click.

If you're after just a simple screen capture then screen hunter is superb.
