Screen Damaged Beyond Repair?

Taking a look at a laptop for a mate, apparently it's been used about 3 times in the 2 years that he's owned it so no damage has been done to it. Here's a picture of the screen -

As you can see the screen looks very distorted. When moving the mouse the cursor moves very slowly and basically flickers. Generally the screen just flickers all over the place and the image is very distorted. Is there a way to fix this or is it damaged beyond repair? It's an old laptop so it won't be the end of the world if it's unrepairable but I'm just wondering if it's possible.

yep, mine looked like that when the cable connection came adrift - looked ok inside, but disconnected, blew dust away, reconnected and now fine. It can be a pain getting to it - its also worth checking on older laptops that the cable hasnt been crimped somewhere along the way as that can have the same intermittent effects.
