Hi guys. Turning on my computer today, I was greeted by a garbled display. Tried reinstalling drivers to no avail. it was a 9800 gt. I've swapped out for a rubbish card and the system is working fine with it. I assume that's the end of the story for that card?

That being the case, what's the best sub hundred quid card I can get these days? Do a bit of gaming at hi red, but nothing serious.

Thanks for reading...

Try the other DVI/VGA port sometimes one will die.

You could try baking the card in your oven, there are guides on the great Google machine.

Best card in the £100 segment is the 6850, can be a little over but it is so much better than anything else under the £100 mark like the 6770/550ti etc its worth getting.

Or you can go second hand and get a 5850/6850/6870 all around the £80 mark.

Wow, just looked that up and it looks good. The temperature changes lately have been drastic, as my computer is by a window with a cold draught coming in and it's been freezing the last couple of days, so I can believe it could be micro fractures.

I've removed the heatsink and preparing the oven! Hah. Both ports are the same so to the oven we go. I'll post back my results in case anyone's interested.

It only bloody worked didn't it!

9 minutes, preheated to 200C, on a foiled baking tray raised on balls of foil GPU down.

Seriously guys thanks for the heads up on that, very glad I posted before just getting another card....
