Hello, i am running windows 7 64bit and my screen randomly goes black, but the monitor light never goes off. Does anyone have any ideas ? i am thinking its something to do with windows.

Anything in event viewer?

Don't suppose you can check the graphics card by using built in graphics on the motherboard or swapping the card.

nothing in event viewer, this only started when i updated windows, i never bothered with any of the updates before, wish i hadn't now.

I assume you've already checked your power/sleep/hibernation settings.

Does it do it whilst gaming (OpenGL/Direct3D type stuff), or when just operating normally?

Don't ever fear the Windows Updates. If there's a problem they fix it rather quickly.

has never happened when in game, just when i am looking through files or browsing the net.

going to take out and clean GPU

I would have gone with either GPU overheating, drivers or bad GPU. As it happens when your browsing, would go with driver error or bad GPU. if you have a spare/old GPU you can test do this.

Have taken it out and gave it a good cleaning, even applied new paste to it the temp has dropped from 40 to 34, i done a complete driver sweep a few days ago, as i said everything was fine till i started doing windows updates, might just be coincidence though.

still doing it, but it is not related to windows or anything i had installed (i reinstalled windows and still doing it) i have eliminated my GPU as i used the on board gfx and still doing it. I will test with a different monitor tonight to eliminate that, someone had mention that it could be the eco settings on my monitor, but have turned that off and still no go.

It's not the monitor, used my daughters monitor and same thing happening, i have taken her memory now and trying that.

Have you done a system restore to before you updated?

I went one better and reinstalled the OS, it still happens. I cant see it being my PSU its only a month old, i really hope it's not my motherboard, but have had a really good look over it and can see nothing wrong nothing has popped nothing is burnt.

The thing that i really don't understand is that it doesn't do this when i am playing games, so it cant be anything to do with putting my system under load, or a heat issue, one would think it is memory at this point, i guess i will find out soon.

If you mean it goes black for a couple of seconds and the comes back mine does the same. No idea what causes it. Using Win8 but never seen it in win7.

It's really strange its like a video driver crash but no error.

Does this all seem ok ? also could a mod move this to the general hardware section please.

I think i have found the problem, for anyone else who might be having a problem like this, uninstall Firefox 23, i have installed Firefox version 19 and all day have not had a single problem, i noticed t his by chance, i was using chrome because my wife uses that to check her facebook, it was left open so i just used that instead of firefox.
