Trying to install a new installation of Vista Ultimate, on a new computer and after the first reboot during the setup, the screen goes blank and hard drive activity ceases. Have attempted to install it from Windows XP (trying to create a dual boot) same problem, have removed 2GB of ram in case there was a problem with installing on 4GB memory, hard to believe but you never know. Attempted to install on one hard drive, not the Raptor, still no good.

The XP installation runs fine and the machine is not overclocked. I read somewhere that it could be the 8800GTX. Any advice would be appreciated.

OcUK 8800GTX
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
Ccrucial Ballistix 4x1GB 6400C4 800Mhz
Corsair HX 620W
WD Raptor 150 and WD 250

What ports on the motherboard are/is your hard drives plugged into?

Only cos I have the P35C DS3R and I had the same issue with the Gigabyte ports, plugged into the Orange Intel ports and it worked fine, even though Xp worked fine in the Gigabyte ports before?

Just a thought :)

Sometimes the screen goes blank just after the first reboot and there is no hard drive activity, at other times the computer resets itself. Either way, once it's rebooted a Vista error message comes up saying that due to an unexpected shutdown, Vista has failed to install click OK the re-start installation process. Going to try with an upgrade Business Vista 64bit version. Probably get the same thing. It wouldn't be the 8800GTX graphics card would it? I read they can cause problems in Vista but not in XP.

I had a similar problem I could not load vista 64bit, screen goes blank just after the first reboot.

I found that my problem was with the DVI video card port and monitor with vista, work ok in XP.

I switched to VGA port on card and monitor then I could load OK. This was with my ATI X800, just upgraded to HD3870 with this card no problem in running with DVI port.

Mine got stuck at the first blue/green screen when you pick the UK.
It would stay there for 15mins then the next screen again for about 10mins.

Found out it was a PCI USB 2 card that was causing it.
Vista installs great now and the PCI USB card is in the bin :)

Thank you for the replies. This is what I found on Overclocker's website, it suggested that the following items in the mobo BIOS are set to disabled from the default enabled: CPU Enhanced Halt (C1E), CPU Thermal Monitor 2(TM2), CPU EIST Function.

Once this was done Vista installed no problem.

If I enable just one of them the screen goes blank, and hard drive activity stops in Vista. Reset it to disabled Vista runs fine. Only problem now is, the CPU runs slightly hotter then before using a stock Intel Cooler. Zalman 9700NT?
