Screen goes blank when image is dark

Hi guys,
This is a bit of a strange one, but recently I have found that when a game shows a mainly black screen -eg FF7 when screen is black, and there is a small amount of writing in the middle - I get absolutely no picture at all.

Checked power settings and everything else obvious I can think of, has anyone ever encountered this?
hd6950 card isn't overheating - never goes over 50 degrees thanks to adequate cooling, and happens when playing games, full screen videos etc.

Anything where the screen is basically black with a little bit of light, and it doesn't show anything.

Any ideas please?

uninstall the drivers, use "driver sweeper" to get rid of all the amd graphics software, restart and install the latest drivers

seemslike your monitors power saving?? my monitor turns off the led backlight if theres nothing on screen
