Hello, could anyone give me a hand plz, my friends PC has been having problems recently while raiding in Wow. Hes had a few crashes in Gary's Mod also, his screen froze and he had to restart the game.

After playing wow for a while his screen goes black for a bit, then when it comes back his colours are messed up, it requires a restart to fix it.

His pc is fairly budget, just an AMD A8 6500 and 6 gig of ram. Hes not very technical with PCs so hes asked for my help, but i dont have any AMD APU experience.

Atm ive got him downloading Valley to test the graphics and see if he gets the same problems. Hes got hte latest drivers installed, has anyone got any ideas please?

ta.

I've had trouble like this in the past there are 3 possible culprits in my experience and I've experienced them all:

1) Ram - if its overclocked and/or undervolted remove OC and try again, game/display will freeze with warnings from Windows about "display driver has recovered from blah blah error". Display drivers can sometimes cause this too so try others/older.
2) Graphics card - if the screen shows random colours and artifacts/bands of colour even during BIOS boot
3) PSU - blackouts are usually a result of impending failure of this especially when under stress. This seems the most likely at this point.

He hasnt overclocked anything, the ram timings should be standard, and the PC is only 3 years old, his PSU is only a tiny 300w one, but since he has no extra graphics card to power that should be ok.

The colours been messed up was just a wow problem, its the thing where the icons get messed up when ya minimise, no need to worry bout them.

Temps were a struggle to find out non of the normal simple temp programs showed anything, im guessing his mobo aint hte best, but with HWinfo he eventually found a CPU and GPU temp of around 50 degrees. Although i got him to run heaven benchmark to see if it causes his graphics driver to crash and he said the temp was displayed in there in the corner and was 84 degrees, i have a feeling its just wrong though since GPUz and Core temp couldnt pick up any heat sensors, so how could Valley. :)

I found a forum link with loads of people complaining about blackouts in wow, and some guy said switching to Dx9 solved it for him, then a lot of the replies were the same, so ive told him to try that for now and see how he gets on.

He wanted to just buy a new GPU to solve it, i said he would need a new PSU also to power it, and it might not solve the problem anyway.
