Screen intermittently flashing black

Hi,

I've recently built a new PC with the following components and have an issue with the screen intermittently flashing black in games:

Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5
Gigabyte ATI 4890
Intel Core i7 920 D0 (SLBEJ)
Titan Fenrir Cooler
OCZ Gold 6GB DDR3 PC3-12800C8 (1600MHz) Tri-channel
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB
LG GH22NS30
Antec 300
Corsair TX 650W

I can play for a few hours before the screen flashes to black, it only does it breifly then back to the game.

Anyone any idea what could be casung this, I'm running Windows 7 64bit with the latest ATI driver (9.6). It also happened with the 9.5 driver too.

I was starting to think maybe the PSU was not powerful enough but then this is the same PSU used in the Overclockers Vantage system with pretty much the same components bar different brand HDD and GFX card.

I have had the GFX card runnning in my old rig with no problem (bar the cap whine as stupidly high FPS in the Crysis menu) though that did have an 850W Enermax PSU in it.

Well with my original 4870, while playing games such as crysis, after a while my screen would just go black, and id have to re-connect the dvi cable etc to fix it.

However it did dissappear after a while, not sure if it was reinstalling the card, or drivers.

Driver or hardware issue, re-seat the card and reinstall drivers, if your still getting the same problem then try older drivers, after that it's either hardware fault with card or even the motherboard, making sure chipset drivers are uptodate could also help as well.

Hi,

The card has been re-seated a number of time, I have now installed the latest chipset drivers so will see how it goes with those installed.

Thanks for the replies.

one thing I can say is it's unlikely to be a power problem, when a card loses power, it doesn't come back to life until a reboot.

Do thse black screens happen at random, or are they usually clustered around "transitions" in the game.....new areas, new levels, big texture loads? If they are clustered, it COULD be something to do with your RAM or swap space.

Hi,

The card is a standard clocked 4890, I have not tried to overclock or under clock it.

The black screens happen randomly, could be in the middle of combat or could be walking between locations and the screen with flash black.

The monitor does not come up saying it has lost signal and the flash is literally a couple of seconds then back into the game. They happen fairly randomly and infrequently.

The GFX card worked fine in my other system and never did this which leads me to beleive it is not the GFX card at fault.
