I've got a Compaq N800c that I got from my old job. Turning it on this evening the screen has gone very grainy, as if you were looking at it really close up. It looks like every other column of pixels is dead. It's pretty difficult to use - getting a headache just posting this.

Does this sound like a hardware fault or software? I'm hoping it's not shagged as it's my only PC at the mo :(

chances are that the flat cable between the LCD and the motherboard has a break in it or a loose connection. Does it make any difference if you wiggle the LCD (towards open/close) or gently tap the back of the LCD cover?

It did when the problem first occured - the screen was ok when open about 2" and flicked to a green or red tint when being moved. I had the fascia off the screen last night & tried wiggling the flat cable but it had no effect.

What's the proper name for the cable? I might se if I can get a new one.

Just LCD cable / ribbon cable / harness.
It'll be specific to your make and model of laptop, and quite often to the exact LCD panel too. Best to get the part number off of the old cable. If they turn out to be hard to source, and therefore expensive bear in mind that its not a guaranteed fix as it could well be an internal contact on the screen! Less likely though...

Just to add, if it is part number 285264-001, then it can be had for £12 from the bay :) or you can get the complete LCD + LCD casing + cable + hinges for £85

Thanks L33.

I was struggling to get the bottom centre screw undone last night. Couldn't properly access the cabe with it in place. Will have another go over the weekend.
