Screen Recording Software - recommendations

Can anyone recommend a good 'screen recording' program that works reliably. Just need to select an area of the screen with a video in it or be able create a tutorial on windows that records the mouse movements and allows me save the file in a standard video format. There appears to be many programs on the net 'free and paid for', it would help if the search could be narrowed down... don't mind paying if the software is reliable.

+1, absolutely love Snag it and although it is a paid for app it's some of the best money I've ever spent on software

Thanks for the recommendations, Camtasia Studio...way to expensive, however snagit seems to work fine but noticed that the sound becomes muffled and distorted. Any ideas?

In work I tried CamStudio and Camstasia

CamStudio (free) works, but it's fiddly, I'd use this at home for light use..

Camstasia is much much better for editing videos etc, we bought a licence for it, very easy to use etc
