screen recording software

Can anyone recommend a good screen recording software. I want to record webchats with sister and her kids in the US for my parents. Currently i am using snagit, but the recording are lower quality then what appears on screen. Can anyone recommend me better software for doing this please?

What way have you snagit configured, to use which of the available codecs?
Its been a while, as i qq most of what i need to record now, but when i used snagit, there was great improvement playing about with codecs and settings.

i am using microsoft video 1 codec with compression quality setting set to 100
