screen resolution problem

Just fitted together an old rig of mine and reinstalled windows so that i can give it to my uncle to replace his stone age one, but have a problem, when i set the screen resolution apply it then click ok on the pop up the resolution stays where i want it until i reboot, as soon as i reboot it reverts to 800*600 anyone know how to cure this?

rig specs are

athlon 64 3200
fx 5950 ultra gfx
2gig ddr400ram

is the gfx card actually being picked up by your comp? drivers all ok?

Presumably you've installed the latest drivers for the GPU?

gfx card shows ok in the task manager and have reinstalled the latest drivers when the problem started
