Screen shimmer

When I turn my PC on or the screen comes out of standby I get a shimmering effect (it's like the brightness is fluctuating). This then stabilises after a fairly short time. Because of this time related effect I don't think it's driver related. Could my monitor be on its way out?

It's a 2232BW, about 3 -4 years old. It's more of a nuisance than a problem.

I like your idea about the backlight. Is this fixable, or even worth fixing? Could this be an opportunity rather than a problem ? I hope to get my hands on a friends monitor so I can (hopefully) eliminate everything else.

Borrowed another monitor and, voila!, no shimmer.
