screen tear on HD TV

I have an LCD monitor and a 1080p plasma plugged in to my video card
seem to get screen tear a lot more when using the TV - any ideas why?

Do you use an AMD card? I was having this an awful lot with video playback to my TV. I fixed it by setting the TV as my main display rather than duplicate or extended. This resolved the issue

You issue may be totally different but its worth a shot if you configuration is the same.

Yeah I had to do the same with my AMD card, if I set it as duplicate I get screen tearing.

Because both has different HZ or are both 60HZ (not talking any of the fake 120-600HZ TV trickery).

Assuming monitor is 1080p.

I know from reading many got issue with 2 screens with different RES/HZ in past in certain modes.

It's a common problem with AMD, if you use different outputs for each display i.e. one on HDMI one on DVI, you will get screen tearing because it can't sync displays across interfaces.

I get this if I mirror display because monitor is 120hz and TV 60hz if I set monitor to 60hz then the TV won't screen tear.
