Screen Tearing depending on the environment

I moved my TV from my bedroom into the sitting room when my girlfriend moved in and I noticed more screen tearing than I did before.
In my bedroom the only outside light came from behind the TV, and for example, in dead rising. I never noticed ANY screen tearing.

When I moved into the sitting room, where the light comes from in front of the TV, the screen tearing was much worse.

Can anyone explain why this might be?

I think DR has always had tearing issues.

Perhaps they weren't as noticable before because of the ambient lighting

Possibly. My bedroom is generally darker, but I would have thought that would make the tearing more apparent.
