Hi there,

I'm getting screen tearing a lot and I have tried different settings but nothing seems to work.

My monitor is 4k 60hz. GPU 5070Ti.

For example I am playing Indiana Jones on Xbox Game Pass and I have tried the following settings:

In game v sync off
In game frame cap 60
RTTS frame cap 0

In game v sync on
In game frame cap 60
RTSS frame cap 0

In game v sync on
In game frame cap 60
RTSS frame cap 60

In game v sync off
In game frame cap 60
RTSS frame cap 60

In the Nvidia app:

Low latency mode ultra/on

Are there any other settings to toggle or combinations to try? I'm going a bit crazy trying to fix it :D

What happens if you turn off any non standard features and just vsync on, no specific frame limiting, no low latency whatever.

I booted up Indiana Jones today and tried the following combo of settings:

In game display mode – windowed
In game v sync on
In game frame cap 60
RTSS frame cap 0
Low latency mode – ultra in NVIDIA app
Max frame rate – off in NVIDIA app

The screen tearing seems to have stopped. I'm not sure why because I tried these settings yesterday. Really bizarre.
Is your monitor GSync or not?
Old monitor so no :(
As above, if you turn VSync On, you shouldn't need anything else to limit framerate.
That's what I thought. But I tried the above settings and it seems to have elimated screen tearing for now. Let's just hope it stays that way. I will test with other games too.
You should you the 3d settings menu in the Nvidia driver and force Vsync on for everything...I always did that, works fine.

I am doing it on AMD to for each game where Vsync fails to work within the game.

Note sure if it is in the Nvidia App.
I switch between my 4k/60hz and 1080p/165hz depending on the game I play so I don't want to force vsync on for everything.
Rivatuner (part of afterburner) framelimiter (name?) works a treat.
Yep using that, it's RTSS
I assume that's what he means by RTSS (Riva Tuner Statistics Server)
Correct!
Is it actually a monitor or a 4K TV?

My 4K TV supports a variable refresh rate range of a whopping 48-60 Hz, which is quite typical apparently. Screen tearing happens below 48 fps.

I would check to make sure the PC has recognised that that your monitor / TV is VRR (or Freesync) compatible and you're getting over 48 fps. Your settings above should prevent >60 fps and therefore any tearing at that end.
A monitor. Old one at that so no fancy features.

As posted above the tearing seems to have stopped even though I am sure I tried those settings yesterday.

Thanks everyone for their input. I will test some more games today to make sure there is no screen tearing.

Just tested Red Dead Redemption 1:

In game display mode – full screen
Refresh rate 60
Framerate cap 60
Vsync on
Triple buffering off
RTSS frame cap 0
Low latency mode – ultra in NVIDIA app
Max frame rate – off in NVIDIA app

Result – no tearing

As soon as I put 60 in RTSS I get screen tearing which I don't understand as I am sure I read that using frame limiting in RTSS is the best way to go?

Are there other settings I need to change in order to use RTSS globally?

Why do you need to use RTSS globally?

Stop capping frame rate manually and just run with VSync On which will cap frame rate at the monitors refresh rate. It's how we achieved "no tearing" back in the old days before things like RTSS and frame rate caps were a thing.

Edit: Also turn off all the NVIDIA low latency stuff - you aren't playing esports at 60hz, so a few ms of latency isn't going to matter, and rules out that conflicting with things as well
I read an article a few weeks ago stating there is reduced latency when using RTSS to limit frame rate. So that's what I have been using sometimes.

Good tip. I'll turn off low latency for single player/slower paced games. Thank you!

As per the ancient Blurbuster’s guide the standard way to avoid these issues is:

- use Nvidia control panel to set a frame cap 3-4fps below the max refresh rate of the monitor.
- use Nvidia control panel to set v-sync to always on.
- in-game v-sync should be set to off.
- turn g-sync on.
Great link.

If my monitor doesn't have g-sync, do the above settings need altering?
