I am looking at upgrading my old iiyama 24" E2472HD screen to a 27" however having started to look into it I'm starting to get confused...

I have an AMD 7800 gfx card on an I5 3570k cpu, I've stopped playing FPS as I tend to get a bit nauseous when I play them on PC but I am ok on the PS4  a friend mentioned that having a 144hz screen may help.

So, I'm hoping a budget of £300 would be plenty to sort a decent screen out. Would you know if 144hz would help with motion sickness on FPS? Also am I best looking at 1080 or 1440 resolution? I'm struggling to see a screen in budget that gets the higher res & 144hz so I guess what I'm trying to say is whats the best screen I can get for my situation?

I put it down to the speed FPS move at on the PC, head bob/FoV etc. maybe 144hz is smoother & would help? I dont know tbh.

However any recommendations on a 27" monitor? Would 144hz be better than the higher res?

Hi Jayman,

I cant speak for console gaming, but I can tell you now that FPS gaming on my old monitor (60hz) makes me feel quite sick also, and I go away feeling like I have "screwy eyes" and also headaches after a good "session" lol :p

Twitch games like call of duty where you are constantly moving around make me feel the worst. I just moved up to 144hz and I feel I can now play these kinds of games in comfort.

Another thing to consider is that older monitors use somemthing called "pulse width modulation", which means they flicker really fast - you cant see it to the naked eye but your brain can, and so can your mobile phone.

I have found PWM monitors to cause me problems after long usage, even on the desktop. The good news is a lot of newer monitors are PWM free, and not just the expensive ones.

You could give a 144hz monitor a try, you might be pleasantly surprised!

Thanks for info X-Mikuru, what screen are you using these days?

Sounds like I'm best off making 144hz my priority & stick with a 1080 screen then?

No worries, some of us are more susceptible to these things. At first I thought it was just me, but I did some googling and others sure enough have headaches and such playing these kinds of games.

Im running an Asus PG279Q, but you dont need to pay nearly as much to get 144hz and/or flicker (PWM) free. :)

Perhaps something like this?

You might just find that you're playing with the framerate too low on the PC as you're turning the options up.

On the PS4 you don't get that choice.

The PS4's GPU is a 7870 near enough so you shouldn't expect much more from your PC than a PS4.

144hz will help greatly, 60 really, gives me a headache now after using 144 for so long. But you need the power to run the 144hz. Basically if your running 60fps, running at 120fps will require 2x the power from the GPU, because it has 2x more frames to render each second.

A ps4 runs at 30fps most of the time and on the odd game at 60. You wont have any options to turn down game settings and increase fps.

The reason a ps4 will feel smoother is because of a controller which has smoother axis movement compared to a mouse and copious amounts of motion blur to make the image feel smoother. Also a ps4 game is designed to run at X frames per second and rarely drops below that, whereas a pc can drop quite regularly which produces stutter.

For a monitor 120-144hz is almost unnoticeable. If you get one get a 120hz monitor. The smoothness is much much nicer than 60hz.

Its a motion sickness feeling that I get. I think 144hz is the way to go, any recommendations on the 27" front?
